Cockatoo_industrial logoIn 2011 we are launching a creative development and performance space for contemporary Australian music on Cockatoo Island.

Call for proposals

Cockatoo Calling is a new initiative that will provide artist residencies, creative development opportunities on Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour for musicians.

This initiative has been realized through places + spaces and has received seed funding from the Australia Council.

Call for proposals are now open and places + spaces invites independent musicians and ensembles to submit proposals for the 2011 program commencing April  2011.

The key objective of Cockatoo Calling is to build capacity for the independent music sector, by providing resources for the development of skills, creation of new works, workshop and performance opportunities.

Our core focus is contemporary Australian music, particularly the genres of improvisation, jazz, sound art and contemporary classical.  However all musical genres focusing on the creation of new Australian works will be considered.

Expressions of interest are processed on a regular basis.  Please read our guidelines and if eligible send your application to:

jkee(at)placesandspaces.com.au.

Guidelines for skills and creative development residency program

The Cockatoo Calling Residency Program is an initiative of places + spaces incorporate association.  Seed funding has been provided through the Australia Council and we have been supported by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
This scheme is aimed at skills development and creative opportunities for established professional musicians.  Priority will be given to independent artists and ensembles ie those who are not major performing arts organizations or triennially funded key organizations.

Places + spaces, Cockatoo Calling Residency Program invites independent musicians and composers to submit expressions of interest for the 2011 program.

ELIGIBILITY

You are eligible to apply for the residency providing you are:
•    A professional Australian musician or ensemble/band or composer
•    18 years of age and over
•    Creating new Australian music
•    Not working with excessively loud music and/or sounds.  (If you are unsure please contact us prior to putting in an application)
•    Residencies to begin in March 2011 and end before 28 February 2012

Please note: Cockatoo Calling encourages applications from mid career established professional artists who are not supported by management infrastructure.  In particular we encourage applications from artists creating new Australian music in the musical genres of sound art, improvised jazz, contemporary classical and world music.

GENERAL INFORMATION
A week runs from Monday to Saturday.
If the residency runs for more than one week, Sunday will be included in the hire rate.
This is a bare bones warehouse space and as such only basic sound equipment is available ie no piano, no mikes etc.   See venue information for more details about the space and images.
If you require additional equipment this will need to be bought in at your own expense.
All waste has to be taken off the island by barge which is expensive and damaging to the environment.   The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust asks that everyone shares in caring for the island by taking their rubbish home with them.

COSTS
Successful applicants will be charged a fee of $100 per week, which must be paid prior to the commencement of the residency.
The space may be used from 9.30 am to 20:00.
Either a performance, talk, workshop or showing must be undertaken by the artists at the completion of the residency.
At the artist’s discretion, a charge may be levied by Cockatoo Calling to the audience or participants of a workshop by the artist for admission or participation
Where a charge is levied a ticket fee of $3 will be collected by Cockatoo Calling
per ticket sold.  The remainder of the ticket price will be for the artist.
When admission is free, no charge will be levied.

REQUESTS FOR ACCOMMODATION
Artists may reside on the island during the creative development.
Artists may request financial assistance for accommodation.
